Diagnosing and Treating Mondayitis

You know the feeling. Monday morning comes and you find it difficult to rouse yourself out of bed. A general malaise hangs over you. The last thing you want to do is head to work. In fact, the very thought fills you with a sense of dread and ennui.

You’ve got Mondayitis.

So what causes Mondayitis—and more importantly—what’s the cure? Well as it so happens, the cure is rooted in the cause. During the weekend we generally get to associate with those with whom we are very close, those that complete and nurture us. We get to do things that make us feel good, indulge in our hobbies or get things done around the house—not because we have to but because we get to. As it turns out, this distinction between have to and get to is key to understanding why we dread Monday mornings. These two sentiments channel different aspects of what motivates us. Those things that we have to do are extrinsic in nature, whereas those that we get to do are intrinsic. They also reside on different tiers of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. When we have to do something we’re talking about meeting basic needs, but when we get to do something we’re nurturing our self-esteem and self-actualizing.

The Cure

Shaking yourself of Mondayitis is an exercise of moving yourself up Maslow’s Hierarchy and developing ways to find intrinsic joy in what Monday morning has in store for you. This means interacting with those close to you, participating in activities important to you, and growing as an individual.

Here are some ideas:

1. Wake up 15 minutes early

Nothing’s worse that starting the week of hurried, anxious, and stressed. Getting up just a little early will give you the time you need to start out the day calm and leisurely.

2. Eat a favorite breakfast

If you have a favorite breakfast or a place you like to eat, go ahead and indulge yourself. Set the right tone by enjoying the most important meal of the day.

3. Wear your favorite outfit

Within the bounds of any dress code you may need to follow, allow your wardrobe to reflect you most positive and engaging self.

4. Work on a favorite project

Some projects excite and energize, while others can suck the life from us like a starving leech. Make the first task of the day something that allows you to stretch your skills and shine.

5. Meet a friend for lunch

We’re social creatures and enjoy the companionship of those close to us. Make it a habit to meet friend for lunch and nurture that part of yourself.

6. Go out of your way for someone

A great way to make your own day is by making someone else’s. Take the time to look for ways to help someone out on something important to them.

7. Start your Monday morning Friday afternoon

It may sound ridiculous, planning your Monday on Friday, but there’s method to the madness. By planning what projects you’ll work on, who you’ll meet for lunch, and so forth, you create a day that you can look forward to—things you get to do.
